Role Overview
Energy 4 Impact (a Mercy Corps organization) is seeking an internationally experienced Team Leader to support the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP III) in the development of off-grid renewable energy projects. The Team Leader will provide overall strategic leadership to a pool of technical and transactional advisory experts, guiding a multidisciplinary team and ensuring high-quality delivery of advisory services. The role involves working closely with public and private sector partners to strengthen enabling environments for renewable energy deployment, requiring deep sector expertise and proven leadership in complex donor-funded programs.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Coordination
- Provide overall responsibility and direction for all advisory packages delivered under the assignment.
- Ensure coherence and alignment of contractor services with other project activities at national and local levels.
- Support GIZ in refining project strategies and contributing to evaluations.
Team Management & Quality Assurance
- Provide managerial leadership to a multidisciplinary team, including planning and managing technical inputs.
- Oversee quality assurance for all outputs to ensure they meet client standards and deadlines.
- Ensure efficient, results-oriented implementation.
Capacity Development & Technical Oversight
- Lead the design and implementation of capacity development measures for government institutions, utilities, and regulators.
- Integrate cross-cutting themes like gender equality, inclusion, and climate resilience into all activities.
- Apply monitoring procedures systematically to inform adaptive management.
Financial & Administrative Oversight
- Oversee financial planning and ensure appropriate use of funds in close consultation with the client.
- Ensure compliance with contractual, administrative, and reporting requirements.
Safeguarding
- Integrate safeguarding risks and mitigations into all areas of work.
- Promote Mercy Corps values, including respecting the dignity and well-being of all participants and team members.
- Encourage open communication and use of reporting mechanisms like the Integrity Hotline.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent, e.g., German Diploma) in Engineering (Energy, Renewable Energy, Power Systems) or Energy Economics/Markets.
- Professional Experience:
- Minimum 12 years of professional experience in the power sector (public and private).
- At least 10 years of experience in renewable energy project development, with 5 years in rural electrification.
- Minimum 10 years of management experience leading teams of 3+ people (5 years within donor-funded projects).
- At least 5 years of experience in two countries outside the West Africa region.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in West Africa, with at least 4 years specifically in Nigeria.
- At least 8 years of experience working on development cooperation projects.
- Language: Excellent command of English (C1 level, CEFR).
