The Senior Manager, Financial Institutions (Banks) is responsible for growing the Financial Institutions business segment within the National Bank of Kenya. The role involves delivering innovative and customized solutions to meet the specific needs of financial institutions, while developing and maintaining correspondent banking relationships with both local and foreign entities. These relationships link the Bank’s clients to Trade Finance, Credit, and dealing lines, facilitating their access to domestic and international markets.
Key Responsibilities
Business Growth & Revenue: Drive revenue across various products including cash, trade, and treasury from the Financial Institutions portfolio. Manage an active pipeline throughout the year to achieve set financial targets.
Credit Analysis & Reporting: Provide financial information and market intelligence for the preparation of credit reports for financial institutions. Prepare credit reports for approval by the credit committee and provide support for correspondent banking clients.
Correspondent Banking Management: Support payments and customer teams with intermediation for transactions. Grow and expand the network of correspondent banks to facilitate the bank’s needs. Investigate and resolve operational problems between correspondent banks and bank units (Corporate, Swift, Payments, Treasury, and Trade Finance).
Risk & Compliance: Conduct customer due diligence (CDD) as per laid down standards for correspondent banking. Ensure consistency in adherence to established policies and procedures to achieve efficiency and compliance. Prevent exposures to risks inherent in correspondent banking activities.
Strategic Advisory: Advise the Bank on any events within the correspondent network that might impact business and service delivery. Negotiate pricing on products offered by correspondent banks on behalf of clients.
Leadership & Development: Ensure proper succession plans and career development for direct reports through performance management, coaching, mentoring, and job rotation. Ensure staff achieve recommended learning hours.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: University Degree in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Banking, or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
Certifications: Relevant certification in Business Development, Finance, International Trade, or equivalent is an added advantage.
Experience: 5–7 years of relevant managerial experience and general banking experience. Strong foundation in trade finance, payments, treasury, back-office processing, SWIFT formatting, and reconciliation.
Technical Skills: Knowledge and experience in emerging correspondent banking practices. Strong knowledge of Central Bank’s Prudential guidelines and offshore banking. Ability to manage Money Laundering risks.
Soft Skills: Highly developed stakeholder management, communication, and negotiation skills. Strategic thinker with a disciplined execution focus. Ability to lead, coach, and motivate international staff.
Language: Fluency in both English and French is required.
