Role Overview
Laikipia University is seeking a Senior Lecturer for the School of Humanities and Development Studies. Reporting to the Chairperson of Department, the Senior Lecturer will be responsible for providing academic leadership in curriculum development, delivering high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and conducting impactful research. The role also involves student mentorship, academic consultancy, and contributing to the university's administrative and management functions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the curriculum development and review process.
Develop appropriate learning and teaching materials to ensure effective delivery of subject matter.
Participate in the development of research projects to extend knowledge in the relevant subject area.
Provide expertise in areas of specialization for university income-generation programs.
Prepare and deliver course outlines, material, and content to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Conduct continual evaluation of students' course work and assess performance.
Maintain accurate records of student attendance, assignments, and continuous assessments for accountability and academic advising.
Generate innovation activities and intellectual property in the area of specialization.
Undertake academic consultancies and publish research in peer-reviewed articles, books, and book chapters.
Assess students’ performance and prepare progress reports for academic decision-making.
Conduct academic seminars at departmental and school levels.
Attend Senate, school, and departmental meetings for university management.
Participate in learned conferences, symposia, and workshops.
Supervise both postgraduate and undergraduate research work.
Undertake placement and supervision of students on industrial attachment, teaching practice, and internships.
Keep up-to-date with current developments in innovation, research, and teaching.
Undertake editorial and review tasks for academic journals and books.
Conduct internal moderation of exams and serve as a patron to academic clubs/organizations.
Participate in ad hoc and statutory university committees.
Requirements for Appointment
Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s degree from an accredited and recognized University in the relevant field.
Earned Doctorate degree (PhD) or equivalent Doctoral degree from an accredited and recognized University in the relevant field.
At least three (3) years of continuous teaching experience at the university level as a Lecturer OR six (6) years of research/industry experience.
A minimum of thirty-two (32) publication points as a Lecturer or equivalent, of which at least twenty-four (24) should be from refereed scholarly journals.
Proven experience in supervising postgraduate students to completion (at least 3 Master’s or 1 PhD and 1 Master’s).
Registration with a relevant professional body (where applicable).
Required Statutory Clearances
Successful candidates must obtain and provide clearance from:
Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)
Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)
Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI)
Registered Credit Reference Bureau (CRB)
Commission for University Education (CUE) for certificates from foreign universities.
