The Senior Deputy Director, Legal Aid will head the technical arm of the Service and will be reporting to the CEO/Director, National Legal Aid Service for the coordination of litigation and alternative dispute resolution.
Duties and Responsibilities
Ensuring effective and efficient delivery of legal aid to indigent people who qualify for grant of Legal Aid.
Overseeing provision of legal advice, assistance, and representation and incidental service to aided persons under the Act.
Ensuring and promoting the provision of effective legal aid at all stages in civil and criminal matters.
Spearheading legal representation in matters where substantial injustice is likely to result.
Coordinating provision of civil and criminal matters among stakeholders for effective delivery of services.
Liaison with criminal justice sector stakeholders for effective delivery of services.
Overseeing the provision of impact litigation in Constitutional and public interest matters.
Facilitating the provision of legal aid services in Constitutional and in public interest matters.
Coordinating development of enforcement strategies with the relevant stakeholders in Constitutional and public interest matters.
Facilitating representation of marginalized persons on cases of public interest matters.
Promoting public interest litigation with regards to consumer protection, environmental protection and any other matter of special concern to the marginalized groups.
Requirements for Appointment
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
At least fifteen (15) years cumulative work experience, five (5) of which must be in Senior management or in a comparable position in the private or public sector.
Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
Certificate in Leadership Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
A valid practicing certificate or a clearance from the Law Society of Kenya.
Demonstrates merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
Fulfils the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.
Remuneration
Remuneration will be in accordance with NLAS Salary Scale: Ksh. 225,197 to Ksh. 407,795 per month.
