Conservation International is seeking a Safeguards Manager to oversee Seed Fund safeguard management in accordance with our Environmental & Social Management Framework (ESMF). This role is critical in ensuring that conservation initiatives identify and mitigate environmental and social risks while promoting gender equality, social inclusion, and the protection of Indigenous Peoples' rights. The manager will lead the development of the Environmental & Social Management System (ESMS), provide technical guidance to country-level partners, and monitor compliance through rigorous due diligence and reporting.
Responsibilities
Oversee Seed Fund safeguard management using a fit-for-purpose ESMS aligned with CI's Environmental & Social Management Framework.
Develop and manage the Seed Fund ESMS, including risk identification, safeguard screening procedures, guidance, and tools.
Integrate E&S risk management procedures into the Fund’s internal processes.
Evaluate safeguard compliance by reviewing E&S documentation and conducting potential site visits for due diligence.
Provide technical guidance to partners on safeguard risk identification, mitigation strategies, and monitoring effectiveness.
Build capacity for partners to advance social commitments, including gender equality and engagement with Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
Review and guide country package grantee proposals, plans, and reporting.
Monitor and report on safeguard compliance and performance indicators at the Fund and country levels.
Design and implement training materials and online resources for safeguard and gender capacity building.
Facilitate awareness-raising and knowledge exchange activities for staff and stakeholders.
Support the operation and design of Fund-level accountability and grievance mechanisms.
Working Conditions
Extended work hours may be required to meet global organizational needs.
Up to 30% international travel may be required.

Qualifications and Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, international development, social sciences, or a related field.
4 to 6 years of experience in project/program design, monitoring, and compliance for donor-funded projects in environment or conservation.
Expertise in designing and applying environmental and social safeguards (stakeholder engagement, gender mainstreaming, grievance redress, etc.).
Strong understanding of project-driven social risks, particularly concerning marginalized groups and Indigenous Peoples.
Experience with gender-responsive programming and implementation of gender action plans.
Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
Ability to work independently, remotely, and within a team environment.
High attention to detail regarding sensitive risk-related issues.
Fluency in English (oral and written) is mandatory.
Fluency in French is required; Spanish proficiency is preferred.
