Job Description
The Research Officer I role is a technical position aimed at supporting agricultural research initiatives. The successful candidate will assist in field sample collection for entomopathogens and endophytes isolation and characterization under the AfroGrow project. Additionally, the role involves the mass rearing of amaranth lepidopteran defoliator insect species and their associated parasitoids, plant production, stakeholder training, and field efficacy trials. The officer will also support students under the AGROVEG Phase II project.
Responsibilities
Participate in the AfroGrow living lab fields assessment for microbial diversity.
Conduct field samples collection (including infected/mycosed insects and soil samples) for entomopathogens and endophytes isolation & characterization.
Assist in the preparation of AGROVEG technical project reports.
Participate in the development of scientific manuscripts for publication based on project data.
Assist in the mass rearing of lepidopteran moths and their associated parasitoids.
Produce plants for insect rearing and supply them for mass rearing and bioassay purposes.
Support laboratory activities and assist students in conducting bioassays for their projects.
Conduct key bioassays related to project objectives and organize experiments.
Participate in the field release of mass-reared natural enemies.
Culture, sub-culture, and mass-produce entomopathogenic fungi and endophytes.
Train farmers and other stakeholders in the AGROVEG Phase II project.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Entomology and/or Microbiology.
At least 2 years of work experience in a relevant practice.
Proven experience in insect rearing, crop production, pathology, and microbiology.
Practical knowledge in field and laboratory assays involving insects, entomopathogenic fungi (EPF), endophytes, and crops.
