The Production Manager is responsible for the overall oversight of vegetable crop production, ensuring optimal land preparation prior to planting for successful crop establishment. This role serves as the critical link between the Field and the Packhouse, ensuring timely product supply while maintaining required quantity and quality standards. The incumbent will also lead teams in preparation for farm audits and customer visits, ensuring compliance with company and customer standards.
Workforce Management: Lead workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, discipline, and Health & Safety compliance.
Planting Programs: Execute planting programs while ensuring correct plant populations, effective weed control, and high farm hygiene standards.
Crop Production: Manage crop production activities including irrigation, pest and disease control, crop nutrition, and general husbandry practices.
Operations Coordination: Plan and coordinate daily, weekly, and monthly farm operations to ensure timely harvesting and delivery of quality produce to the Packhouse.
Compliance & Audits: Ensure compliance with customer standards and audit requirements, addressing any deviations promptly.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate operational records and ensure accountability across all teams.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Achievement of agreed production targets.
Quality of produce supplied to the Packhouse (65% PO).
Forecast accuracy (15% variance margin).
Timeliness and quality of cultural operations (support, weeding, coiling, tucking, topping).
Irrigation efficiency and waste management.
Effective pest and disease control.
Crop nutrition management.
Staff discipline and team performance.
Qualifications and Key Competencies
Degree or Diploma in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field.
Proven experience in vegetable crop production management.
Strong leadership and people management skills.
Sound knowledge of irrigation systems, pest and disease management, and crop nutrition.
Experience with audit compliance and customer standards (e.g., GlobalGAP).
Excellent planning, forecasting, and communication skills.
