Role Overview
Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is seeking a Research Officer - Data Management to join the Wellcome Research Programme in Nairobi. This role is responsible for managing the full data engineering pipeline across nine to ten countries, covering extraction, transformation, validation, documentation, and version control of all study datasets. The officer will ensure the implementation of data quality frameworks and maintain secure environments for health data in compliance with national laws.
Key Responsibilities
Data Pipeline Management: Manage the end-to-end data engineering pipeline (ETL) across multiple countries, including extraction, transformation, validation, and version control of study datasets.
ETL & Dictionary Design: Design and maintain extraction transform load (ETL) workflows, data dictionaries, and validation rules.
Data Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain data quality frameworks (completeness, internal consistency, timeliness). Run routine DQ checks and produce facility DQ scorecards.
Security & Compliance: Coordinate encrypted transfers, access controls, and audit logs. Maintain secure country-specific servers, encryption, anonymization processes, and registries for compliance with national data laws.
Analysis Support: Build analysis-ready datasets and documentation (README, data schemas, provenance). Reshape datasets (wide/long) and construct panels/facility period indexing.
Federated Analysis: Support in-country teams to execute script-based federated analysis workflows using centrally developed code without exporting raw data.
Collaboration: Work with analysts and statisticians to support data linkage, model preparation, and metadata curation.
Requirements
Education: Master's degree in Biostatistics, Health Informatics, or Data Management (Mandatory).
Experience: At least 3 years of working experience managing large routine health datasets and health facility assessments (Mandatory).
Technical Skills: Proficiency in SQL, Python, or R; data modelling; data quality frameworks; documentation; and security best practices (Mandatory).
