The Regulatory Engagement Executive (Junior Management) role is responsible for supporting the Head of Regulatory Affairs Kenya and the Senior Regulatory Engagement Manager Kenya in fulfilling their mandate. This includes collaboration with the Centre of Excellence (COE) on local trends concerning regulatory, fiscal, Anti-Illicit Trade (AIT), and Business Communication and Sustainability issues.
Key Responsibilities
Fiscal Strategy Support
- Support the local execution of the fiscal strategy while being cognisant of local business and reputational risks.
- Monitor the local excise and trade environment.
- Obtain a general understanding of the research on demand, tax revenues, illicit trade and standard processes in other markets.
- Support the formal submission process to the National Treasury, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), parliamentary committees and other relevant Government ministries, Agencies and State Departments.
- Prepare robust local analysis that will feed into advocacy for the delivery of key messaging to the National Treasury, KRA and relevant parliamentary committees.
Regulatory Strategy Support
- Support the local execution of the regulatory strategy whilst being cognisant of local business and reputational risks.
- Monitor the local regulatory environment covering BAT’s product portfolio.
- Support the Senior Regulatory Manager Kenya in developing, in collaboration with the COE, the local regulatory engagement strategy and providing support in respect of the corresponding communication plan.
- Support the formal submission process to local regulators.
- Prepare robust local analysis and advocacy materials for the delivery of key messaging to regulators.
Anti-Illicit Trade (AIT) Strategy
- Support the local execution of the AIT strategy developed by the COE whilst being cognisant of the local business, security and reputational risks involved.
- Collect information for appropriate reviews and evaluation of illegal competitor’s activities.
- Provide assistance in the procuring of local advocacy to support BATs position.
- Perform administrative activities (risk management, payment of invoices etc.) in respect of consultants, professional service providers and champions.
- Support the deployment of local engagement and campaign communications.
Internal and External Communications
- External Communications: Support media relations, develop and circulate press releases, manage company representation in interviews and events, and supervise the BAT Kenya website.
- Internal Communications: Deliver corporate information via briefings, emails, MS Teams, and newsletters. Drive culture change and communicate major policies and business principles.
- Corporate Brand Management: Apply corporate visual identity and manage the corporate brand within the business.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Support representation in associations where BAT is a member and assist in annual sustainability reporting.
What are we looking for?
- Educational Background: University Degree (BA/BSc/HND).
- Government and Corporate Affairs Expertise: Minimum of two years’ proven experience in public policy or corporate affairs.
- Corporate Communications Expertise: Minimum of two years’ proven experience in corporate communications/media management role.
- Stakeholder and Network Management: Confirmed ability to work with third-party networks and diverse partner groups to drive organizational objectives.
- Industry, Regulatory, and Fiscal Expertise: General understanding of the tobacco/nicotine industry, including its regulatory environment and fiscal frameworks (added advantage).
- Commercial Savvy: Business understanding, commercial awareness, and the ability to resolve problems.
- Influencing and Relationship-Building: Strong influencing, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to work with internal and external collaborators.
- Problem-Solving Ability: Proven ability to solve simple problems and propose solutions to management.
- Policy Work: Good understanding of regulatory and fiscal policy structures in Kenya.
