Reporting to the Senior Manager – Project Management, the Program Manager will work with the Digital IT lead in an assigned unit to provide leadership in the pursuit and delivery of complex Information, Communications, and Technology (ICT) solutions for Safaricom programs and projects. This role is responsible for partnering with the delivery unit to ensure realization of business outcomes through the end-to-end lifecycle of programs, from kick-off and execution to control and closure.
Key Responsibilities
- Planning and Delivery: Lead the planning and delivery of infrastructure-focused projects by developing and managing integrated project plans that incorporate data center, cloud, virtualization, and platform components. Ensure technical deliverables, dependencies, risks, and acceptance criteria are aligned with business outcomes and service readiness.
- Execution Coordination: Manage infrastructure project execution, ensuring engineering, architecture, and vendor teams are aligned and accountable for delivering milestones.
- Technical Oversight: Apply working knowledge of core infrastructure domains (cloud, compute, virtualization, containers, storage, networking, and databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, GaussDB) to understand delivery implications and identify cross-domain risks.
- Execution Discipline: Drive project discipline using standard tools and frameworks such as EPM, MS Project, SharePoint, SOWs, and governance structures.
- Dependency Management: Manage cross-functional dependencies across infrastructure, application, vendor, and business teams to ensure platform readiness matches service/product launch timelines.
- Readiness Enforcement: Enforce stage gates and readiness criteria, including infrastructure readiness (environment setup, security, capacity) and business readiness (UAT, operational handover).
- Risk and Issue Management: Proactively manage risks arising from technical complexity, vendor delivery, and changing requirements with clear escalation strategies.
- Financial Management: Track project financials, including CAPEX utilization for infrastructure initiatives, and ensure spend aligns with business cases.
- Governance and Reporting: Produce clear, insight-driven reporting reflecting project health, key risks, and alignment to business outcomes.
- Closure and Transition: Ensure structured project closure, including operational handover, documentation, benefits tracking, and lessons learned.
- Team Leadership: Provide leadership and oversight for project teams and direct reports, ensuring role clarity and execution discipline.
Requirements and Qualifications
- A Degree in an ICT or Business-related field.
- Certified in PMP or PRINCE2.
- Valid Agile certification.
- At least 4 years of experience specifically in managing IT projects.
- Strong knowledge of Waterfall and Agile concepts in project delivery.
- Proven ability to motivate teams to achieve business outcomes.
- Integrity and accountability in upholding company code of conduct and safety policies.
