Job Description
The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is offering a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship aimed at developing early-career scientists into independent researchers. This fellowship focuses on One Health research themes, promoting South-South cooperation, and building cross-border partnerships. Fellows are expected to engage in high-impact research, pursue competitive funding, and participate in global scientific platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Career Development: Develop and implement Independent Development Plans (IDPs) within the first three months to outline a professional career trajectory towards scientific independence.
Continuous Learning: Successfully complete mandatory adjunct courses in One Health Ethics, Implementation Science, and Applied Leadership Skills.
Research Activities: Conduct mentored research within the laboratories of co-mentoring Principal Investigators (PIs) and establish high-impact cross-border research partnerships.
Strategic Partnerships: Build and leverage collaborations with NIH-funded projects and other foundation-funded research initiatives.
Scientific Engagement: Participate in and contribute to global scientific platforms such as CUGH, ASTMH, and the World One Health Congress.
Monitoring and Reporting: Attend monthly seminars and quarterly joint meetings to track progress and provide research updates.
Resource Mobilization: Develop competitive research grant proposals to secure intramural and extramural funding to establish an independent research career.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: A PhD in Clinical/Public Health Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Medical Microbiology, Applied Microbiology, Immunology, Public Health/One Health, Tropical and Infectious Diseases, Molecular Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or Data Science.
Thematic Experience: Research focus on One Health themes such as Endemic and Neglected Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, General Zoonotic Diseases, and Data Sciences.
Academic History: PhD must have been earned within the past five years from a partner academic institution.
Track Record: Strong publication record in one or more thematic priorities of OHEART.
Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills are mandatory.
Soft Skills: Proven ability to work effectively in multi-institutional and multi-cultural environments.
