Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a fully fledged chartered university committed to a broad-based, wholistic and inclusive system of education. The university is currently seeking qualified and experienced Part-time Tutors for the Health Records and IT departments.
Role Overview
The primary purpose of this role is to plan, prepare, and teach units assigned in line with the university curriculum. Tutors are expected to provide high-quality instruction, develop relevant learning materials, and monitor student progress through assessments and practical sessions.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Delivery: Plan, prepare and teach the units assigned as outlined in the course outline in line with the course curriculum.
Learning Materials: Develop learning materials, timely prepare and submit professional records, and maintain records to monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance.
Individualized Learning: Plan, develop and deliver appropriate learning plans for individual students.
Student Assessment: Assess students' work, monitor their achievement, and conduct/mark Trainees’ Assessment Tests (C.A.Ts and end-of-term assessments), ensuring marks are uploaded timely in the MIS.
Practical Training: Carry out practical instructions for trainees, maintaining their portfolios of evidence and supervising students during assessments.
Curriculum Development: Contribute to the development, planning, and implementation of a high-quality curriculum and participate in the course review process.
Departmental Support: Participate in departmental meetings and perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements for Appointment
Academic Qualifications: An earned Bachelor’s degree qualification in the relevant area (Health Records, Information Technology, or related field) from a recognized/accredited university.
Experience: At least three (3) years of teaching experience in a similar Institution.
Professional Registration: Be registered as a Trainer by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) and by the relevant Professional Body (where applicable).
Pedagogy: Must have completed formal pedagogy training.
Industry Experience: Relevant work experience in the industry will be an added advantage.
Requirements for Short Course Tutors (Languages)
To qualify for appointment to teach short language courses (German, Italian, French, English, Kiswahili), candidates must have:
An earned B2 Proficiency Level certificate or degree in the relevant language (e.g., Goethe-Zertifikat, CELI, DELF, or a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics).
At least two (2) years of teaching experience in a similar institution.
Experience with CEFR-aligned curricula and communicative teaching methodologies.
