Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a fully fledged chartered university committed to a broad-based, holistic and inclusive system of education. The Department of Languages is seeking to recruit qualified Part-time Tutors to facilitate learning in various language units and short courses. The successful candidates will be responsible for planning, preparing, and teaching assigned units while fostering a conducive learning environment for students.
Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare and teach assigned units in line with the course curriculum and outline.
- Develop learning materials and maintain professional records, including student progress, achievement, and attendance.
- Plan and deliver appropriate learning plans tailored to individual student needs.
- Assess students' work, monitor achievement, and participate in the Course review process to adapt delivery patterns.
- Examine and mark Trainees’ Assessment Tests (CATs and end-of-term assessments) and upload marks to the Management Information System (MIS) timely.
- Conduct practical instructions for trainees and maintain their portfolios of evidence.
- Supervise students during assessments and contribute to the development, planning, and implementation of a high-quality curriculum.
- Participate in departmental meetings and perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
General Qualifications
- An earned Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area from a recognized/accredited university.
- At least three (3) years of teaching experience in a similar institution.
- Registered as a Trainer by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).
- Registered by a relevant Professional Body (where applicable).
- Completed pedagogy training.
- Relevant industry work experience is an added advantage.
Requirements for Language Short Courses
To teach short courses, candidates must specifically possess:
- An earned B2 Proficiency Level certificate or degree in the relevant language:
- German: Goethe-Zertifikat
- Italian: CELI (Certificato di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana)
- French: DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française)
- English: Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics
- Kiswahili: Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics
- At least two (2) years of teaching experience in a similar institution, preferably teaching up to B2 level.
- Experience with CEFR-aligned curricula and communicative teaching methodologies.
