Mount Kenya University is seeking qualified Part-Time Trainers in Nautical Science to deliver high-quality instruction and training in maritime courses. The role involves preparing future maritime professionals by offering both theoretical and practical lessons aligned with international maritime standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Teach courses in navigation, ship stability, meteorology, cargo handling, and maritime law.
Deliver practical training in bridge simulation, chart work, and voyage planning.
Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments aligned with IMO STCW standards.
Mentor and guide cadets in academic and professional development.
Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback.
Support students in preparation for certification exams and onboard training.
Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the nautical science curriculum.
Integrate emerging technologies and industry practices into training modules.
Ensure training programs meet national and international maritime education standards.
Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and assessments.
Work closely with other trainers, academic staff, and industry partners.
Participate in faculty meetings, workshops, and professional development activities.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nautical Science, Marine Navigation, or related field.
Certificate of Competency (CoC) as an Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (STCW II/1), Master Mariner or Chief Mate (STCW II/2).
Minimum of 2-3 years’ sea service and prior teaching or training experience in a maritime institution is highly desirable.
Familiarity with IMO Model Courses and STCW requirements.
