Mortician

Responsibilities

• Organise transport and respond immediately to death notifications from homes, hospitals, or other locations.
• Prepare, dress, embalm, and casket the deceased for funerals.
• Manage legal documentation, including obtaining information from families and medical facilities to complete burial permits and death certificates.
• Ensure the body stays in good condition through the stay in the mortuary and apply cosmetics for viewing or burial.
• Assist with forensic and paediatric autopsies, evidence collection, and the delivery of laboratory specimens.
• Perform complete restoration of remains for release to receiving facilities.
• Prepare bodies for cremation or out-of-state cemeteries, and assist in graveyard preparation when required.
• Maintain and service equipment and machinery used within the funeral home.
• Maintain accurate digital and manual records of tests, batch registers, and report forms.
• Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team for coordinated patient care.
• Participate in unit-based continuing education and implementation of quality control programs.
• Assist in data collection and monitoring of quality and performance indicators.
• Participate in departmental events such as medical camps and public screenings.

Requirements

• Certificate in Mortician Course.
• Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
• Minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a funeral establishment.
• Membership in a registered funeral professional association.
• Strong knowledge of medical record formats and attention to detail.
• Cosmetic experience for restorative work.
• Ability to empathize with grieving families.
