Job Description
The Senior House Officer, Paediatrics A&E will provide quality primary paediatric care to all patients and continuously evaluate and improve the quality of primary paediatric care to meet patient treatment goals. This role is central to ensuring specialized care for children in emergency and clinical settings, working closely with consultants and multi-disciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Service
Participate in ward and casualty work, including clerkship, patient education, and writing discharge summaries.
Maintain ongoing discussions of patient cases with instructors and consultants.
Participate in general and specialist clinics.
Contribute to quality improvement activities such as medical audits, process indicators, and the development of management guidelines.
Assist in the preparation of morbidity and mortality reviews.
Initiate timely consultations with relevant departments to establish optimized treatment plans for specialized cases.
Coordinate with nursing and ward staff to ensure appropriate patient care and treatment.
Emergency Care
Conduct examinations and observations of emergency cases, including taking case histories and physical examinations.
Order and interpret diagnostic laboratory and radiology studies.
Provide timely attention to critical patients.
Perform privileged and life-saving emergency surgical and medical procedures when necessary.
Counseling & Patient Education
Educate patients and guardians on wellness, disease prevention, and early detection.
Provide educational materials and referrals to patients and their caregivers.
Ensure patients are informed regarding consent, choice of physician, and the right to a second opinion.
Administration & Professional Development
Participate in departmental committees and internal business meetings.
Attend and present at Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions.
Develop and pursue personal learning objectives.
Assist in teaching interns, elective students, and nursing staff.
Serve as a role model for junior colleagues.
Maintain professional interpersonal skills and readiness to undertake additional duties as required.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.ChB).
Valid registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
A valid Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course Certificate.
Successful completion of internship plus at least one year of post-internship experience.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Demonstrated patience, compassion, and ethical clinical conduct.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage work-related stress effectively.
