Role Overview
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the world's environmental agenda. UNEP's Climate Finance Unit (CFU) seeks to unlock and (re)direct public and private capital to sustainable land use. As part of the ProCongo project—a joint initiative with the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) funded by the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI)—UNEP is seeking a Market Research Consultant to carry out research and mapping of the financial and market ecosystem in the Congo Basin. This role ensures that the products and services of the ProCongo initiative are tailored to the local and regional market to foster green economic growth and reduce deforestation.
Responsibilities
Carry out research and a mapping of the financial and market ecosystem in the Congo Basin.
Support the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review.
Unlock and (re)direct public and private capital to sustainable land use, including deforestation-free commodity production.
Lead early-stage market development and support to MSMEs through technical assistance and small grants.
Manage environmental & social (E&S) risk and impact management, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV).
Work with UNCDF to seek to create partnerships and/or a network of financial institutions.
Requirements
Education: An advanced university degree (Master degree equivalent) in natural resource management, international development, management, economics, or finance. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's) in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of 2 years working experience in private equity, venture capital, and financial/market analysis with a focus on emerging markets and developing economies is required.
Technical Expertise: Experience in finance for nature-positive and climate-resilient SMEs and conducting research on green economics growth is required.
Software & Skills: Proficiency in standard software applications; excellent writing, communication, and analytical skills; good interpersonal skills.
Autonomy: Ability to work independently to complete given assignments.
Desirable: Excellent networks including government, think tanks, NGOs, and international organisations.
