Under the supervision of the Kwetu IMTA project coordinator, with a dotted line on technical matters to the Centre Manager or designate, the Mariculture Assistant/Technician will be responsible for implementing Blue Mariculture (Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture - IMTA) projects. As the primary technical person, you will ensure the optimal operationalization of mariculture infrastructure at the centre.
Key Responsibilities
Manage day-to-day hatchery operations as the technical lead.
Maintain an extended field presence to backstop project activities, including training farmers and assisting in the development of farming for oysters, sea cucumber, seaweed, rabbit fish, and other marine cultured species.
Provide input for the development of training manuals for selected species.
Document and disseminate mariculture and environmental research results through reports and exhibitions.
Conduct regular water quality monitoring in culture systems and troubleshoot related technical challenges.
Assist in preparing, organizing, and conducting training sessions as guided.
Provide monthly activity reports and specialized technical reports.
Collaborate with researchers and students to refine small-scale mariculture and increase production.
Report any incidences regarding cultured organisms or facilities (ponds, cages, hatcheries).
Perform daily routine monitoring of the demo site to ensure security from predators, theft, and vandalism.
Collect and submit weekly/daily technical data to management.
Host students and visitors interested in mariculture and mangrove conservation.
Maintain mariculture facilities and equipment, including calibration monitoring and minor renovations.
Manage fingerling collection, stocking, fish feeding, and general culture facility management.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: At least a Diploma in Fisheries and Aquaculture, Coastal and Marine Resources Conservation, Aquatic Sciences, Microbiology, Biology/Zoology, Marine Engineering, or as a Lab Technologist.
Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience working in mariculture or marine-related programs.
Technical Skills: Experience in coastal and marine aquaculture technology, specifically within a laboratory setup. Experience operating marine hatchery equipment is an added advantage.
Work Ethics: Self-motivated, result-oriented, and able to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work extended hours, including night shifts and weekends as needed.
Documentation: Ability to read and comprehend Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and possess basic report writing skills.
Resource Management: Accountable for the wise use of departmental resources.
