The National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) is seeking to recruit qualified individuals for the position of Legal Aid Officer I (10 Posts). The National Legal Aid Service is a state agency established under the Legal Aid Act 2016 with the mandate to offer legal aid services to the vulnerable, marginalized and indigent persons. Our mandate is to provide affordable, accessible, sustainable, credible and accountable legal aid services to indigent persons in Kenya.
Duties and Responsibilities
Preparation of court pleadings in the relevant court/ tribunals;
Conduct and analyse research data and compiling reports;
Provide legal advice to clients and members of the public seeking legal assistance;
Prepare legal opinion and pleadings;
Represent clients in the relevant court/tribunal;
Preparing and filing court pleadings in arbitration proceedings;
Providing legal services in relation to litigation and alternative dispute resolution;
Attending court for prosecution/defending cases involving NLAS as per dates taken;
Initiating and undertaking pre-trial briefings, obtaining, and collating evidence and witness statements and case law; and
Updating and managing the court case management system.
Requirements for Appointment
At least three (3) years cumulative work experience at the grade of Legal Aid Officer II or comparable position in the Public Service or Private Sector;
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized university;
Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law;
Admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate or a clearance from the Law Society of Kenya; and
Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
Remuneration
Salary Scale: Ksh. 68,500 x 5,000 – 73,500 x 5,000 – 78,500 x 5,000 – 83,500 x 5,000 – 88,500 x 5,000 – 93,500 x 5,000 – 98,500 x 5,000 – 103,500 p.m.
