At ALX, we’re unlocking the future we want to see. We’re catalyzing the transformation of Africa, by developing the next generation of bold, innovative, ethical and entrepreneurial leaders. We’re unlocking the potential of the world's largest workforce. The future is calling: be the answer.
Role Overview
As a Learning Scientist at ALX, you will guide pedagogical decisions across the platform and help design AI-driven educational products grounded in real learning science.
Responsibilities
Pedagogical Direction
Guide pedagogical decisions across the platform — input at design time, learning-efficacy judgment at evaluation time.
Adapt and interpret the ALX learning framework so the platform is informed by real pedagogy rather than decorated with it.
Experimentation & Product Collaboration
Design experiments against the platform’s core pedagogical assumptions alongside the experimentation team (e.g., evaluating whether tutor guidance empowers or crutches learners).
Assist in designing and evaluating AI products alongside engineers, translating learning science into concrete product decisions.
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualification: BA/BSc/HND degree or equivalent.
Learning Science: Solid grounding — ability to cite and apply modern frameworks beyond teaching intuitions.
AI Literacy: Strong understanding of what LLM-based tools can and cannot do to co-design with engineers.
Experiment Design: Hypotheses formulation, measures, and methodological rigor to test learning claims honestly.
Desirable Traits & Experience: Prior EdTech product work, familiarity with competency frameworks or knowledge tracing, and experience with African education contexts.
Essential Traits: Willingness to challenge assumptions, translate across disciplines, and adapt pedagogical beliefs based on empirical evidence.
