The Lab Associate will perform all tasks related to next-generation sequencing (NGS) within the Cancer Centre. This includes DNA and RNA isolation from blood samples, human tissues, and other biological specimens, as well as library preparation and execution of sequencing on Illumina platforms. The role also involves managing genomic data, maintaining laboratory inventory, and supporting research activities through data interpretation and report writing. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for accurate sample logging, documentation, and the training of students and newly inducted staff members.
Key Responsibilities
Sample Processing & Preparation
Ensure accurate logging, labeling using barcodes, documentation, and proper storage of samples in temperature-controlled freezers.
Perform DNA and RNA isolation from blood samples, human tissues, and other biological specimens.
Conduct quantification and quality control of DNA and RNA using Nanodrop and Qubit technology.
Library Preparation & Sequencing
Prepare nucleic acid libraries, including fragmentation, adapter ligation, and amplification.
Execute and monitor sequencing runs on the Illumina NGS platform and perform necessary troubleshooting.
Quality Control & Assurance
Secure and transfer data for primary, secondary, and tertiary analysis.
Assist faculty in research by conducting experiments, analyzing data, and interpreting results.
Contribute to the write-up of manuscripts, research reports, presentations, and grant applications.
Assemble and prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the NGS Core Facility.
Maintain and enhance bioinformatics pipelines and variant analysis databases.
Evaluate new bioinformatics tools and methods to improve analysis accuracy and efficiency.
Laboratory Operations
Manage procurement by raising PRs and MSRs for research supplies and consumables; liaise with the AKU Warehouse for timely delivery.
Report equipment breakdowns and follow up with relevant departments.
Engage in professional development, including lab training and academic forums to keep abreast of current trends.
Support the development of central stock inventory and store management.
Requirements and Qualifications
BSc or MSc in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a relevant scientific field.
At least 3 years of work experience in a genomic laboratory or a similar environment.
Familiarity with various molecular techniques, specifically next-generation sequencing.
Working knowledge of basic sciences and laboratory techniques.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or within a group.
Capacity to multitask across several projects in a fast-paced environment.
Superior interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
