Role Overview
Established in 2009, the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is an African-led, regional non-profit policy think tank that bridges the gap between research, policy, and practice in population change, sustainable development, and health systems strengthening in Africa. The Knowledge Management Specialist will play a pivotal role in the partnership between AFIDEP and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MoEP) in Kenya. This role focuses on designing and operationalising a practical knowledge management system for the MoEP Research and Knowledge Management Unit, ensuring evidence is effectively used to inform energy and climate policy.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and operationalisation of a practical, user-friendly knowledge management (KM) system for the MoEP Research and Knowledge Management Unit.
- Develop and institutionalise tools, SOPs, and processes to support effective knowledge capture, organisation, and use.
- Curate and synthesise relevant evidence to inform policy and decision-making.
- Deliver hands-on training and mentorship to build sustainable in-house capacity within the Ministry.
- Support stakeholder engagement, policy processes, and knowledge translation efforts.
- Contribute to project coordination, learning, and reporting within the AFIDEP–MoEP partnership.
- Systematically map and track knowledge needs across the energy sector, focusing on renewable energy and climate-health linkages.
- Identify and curate data, evidence, and information from national, regional, and global sources to populate the database.
- Serve as the primary liaison between MoEP and AFIDEP, participating in project management and monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) activities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: A Master’s degree in Information Science, Knowledge Management, Library Studies, Information Technology, Public Policy, Development Studies, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ relevant professional experience in knowledge management, information management, or a closely related field.
- Technical Expertise: Demonstrated experience in designing or managing knowledge databases/information systems, preferably in government or research contexts.
- ICT Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, database software, and document management tools like SharePoint. Experience with data visualisation tools is an advantage.
- Communication: Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to produce clear reports and training materials.
- Data Literacy: Strong ability to organise, interpret, and present information clearly.
Desirable Attributes
- Familiarity with AI-powered knowledge tools and digital tools for information retrieval.
- Prior experience working within a government ministry, department, or agency (MDA) in Kenya.
- Knowledge of Kenya’s energy sector or climate policy processes.
- Experience in embedded or knowledge broker roles within government institutions.
