Equity Bank Kenya is seeking a highly experienced professional for the role of Country Head of Asset & Liability Management (ALM). The job holder is responsible for executing the ALM strategy, ensuring an efficient and well-coordinated approach to managing liquidity risk and interest rate risk in the balance sheet. This role contributes to the optimization of the balance sheet by ensuring adherence to internal policies, regulatory requirements, and international best practices. The role is positioned at the Senior Manager/General Manager grade and provides critical support to the Country Treasurer.
Key Responsibilities
Treasury Strategy
- Liquidity Management: Oversee and enhance treasury liquidity processes to monitor and manage the bank’s liquidity positions (including CRR and gap analysis).
- Interest Rate Risk Management: Collaborate with the Country Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO) to ensure regulatory compliance and mitigate impacts from interest rate and liquidity risks, particularly concerning IRRBB exposures.
- Proactive Risk Management: Anticipate market and regulatory challenges, implementing proactive strategies and contingency plans for unforeseen events.
- Policy Development & Implementation: Partner with the CFO and Country Treasury to ensure effective execution of ALM policies, guidelines, and product manuals.
- Balance Sheet Management: Focus on balance sheet analytics, comprehensive forecasting, and accurate financial modeling to inform strategic decision-making.
- Funding Strategy: Formulate strategies to manage the bank’s liquidity and funding position optimally, including diversification and lengthening of the funding profile.
Risk Management & Governance
- Limit Management: Monitor and escalate liquidity and IRRBB risks, ensuring strict adherence to approved limits.
- Compliance: Ensure systems and processes comply with Group and country treasury policies, ERMF, and AML procedures.
- Governance Oversight: Provide leadership and oversight over prudent risk management practices across subsidiaries.
Operational Processes
- Research & Guidance: Conduct research on market dynamics and regulatory environments; provide expert guidance to ALCO and other key stakeholders.
- Financial Optimization: Ensure maximum return on excess liquidity and investment securities while minimizing funding costs and interest rate volatility risk.
- Implementation: Collaborate with Market Risk, Finance, and Credit on ICAAP, ILAAP, and FTP (Funds Transfer Pricing) frameworks.
Talent Management
- Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop treasury teams, fostering a high-performance culture focused on accountability and innovation.
- Succession Planning: Drive succession planning and talent development while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Experience: 10+ years’ experience in Treasury or Finance, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Academic Background: Post-graduate degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or a related field. A Master’s degree is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Mandatory Certification: ACI Dealing Certificate is a mandatory requirement.
- Preferred Certifications: Professional certification such as CFA, FRM, or CA is strongly preferred.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Must be deeply experienced in Basel III regulatory requirements and have a strong understanding of African financial markets.
- Technical Skills: Proven experience with Treasury Management Systems (TMS), financial modeling, and advanced Excel/PowerPoint skills.
