Job Description
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is a non-profit, scientific institution that conducts research on the most pressing challenges of forest and landscape management around the world. In partnership with the Varda Foundation, CIFOR is implementing a NORAD-funded project titled "Establishing an Ecosystem of Data-driven Services." This initiative aims to enhance access to reliable soil information through interoperable data infrastructure and the scaling of soil health use cases.
Role Overview
The consultant will contribute to documenting and analyzing soil health use cases, capturing the co-design, application, and scaling of data-driven approaches across sub-Saharan Africa. The role involves generating evidence-based insights, providing technical support, and strengthening data-driven advisory services for smallholder farmers and pastoralist communities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Document and analyze soil health use cases by capturing the co-design, application, and scaling of data-driven approaches that address soil degradation and improve productivity.
Generate evidence-based insights and best practices to support the development of replicable and scalable soil health solutions.
Align project outputs with continental frameworks such as the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan and the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
Provide technical support by consolidating project progress into high-quality reporting elements and visual assets.
Strengthen targeted, data-driven advisory services for smallholder farmers and pastoralist communities.
Identify barriers and opportunities for integrating soil health into policy, planning, and investment frameworks.
Contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to food security, poverty reduction, and climate resilience.
Education, Knowledge and Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of experience producing soil health-related outputs, including technical reports and analytical products.
Demonstrated knowledge of soil health initiatives and frameworks across the African Union.
Proven experience producing technical and visual soil health outputs in support of the African Union soil health agenda.
Experience working effectively within interdisciplinary teams across research, policy, and implementation domains.
Demonstrated experience documenting and synthesizing soil information systems and related data platforms.
Strong expertise in condensing complex information into accessible, user-oriented electronic and visual knowledge products.
Experience supporting projects aligned with continental frameworks such as the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan and CAADP.
