Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) is seeking a Coffee Trader based in Nairobi to manage the procurement, sale, and logistics of coffee commodities. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end trading process, from contract negotiation and customer relationship management to market analysis and financial reporting. This role requires a deep understanding of the coffee supply chain, market dynamics, and the ability to operate effectively in a high-pressure environment.
Key Responsibilities
Trading and Sales Operations: Execute coffee purchases and sales; negotiate contracts covering price, quality, shipment periods, payment terms, and Incoterms (specifically FOB).
Customer Relationship Management: Develop and manage a portfolio of customers, including roasters, traders, and importers; lead negotiations for strategic accounts.
Supply Chain and Origin Engagement: Participate in origin travel, crop assessments, and producer visits; oversee the execution of FOB contracts from confirmation through shipment.
Problem Solving: Efficiently resolve shipment, quality, or contractual issues as they arise.
Market Insights: Provide market analysis and price guidance to customers and internal teams; evaluate crop conditions, logistics constraints, and country-specific risks.
Business Development: Identify new market opportunities and expand the customer base.
Risk and Compliance: Ensure the accuracy of contracts, confirmations, and shipping instructions; ensure compliance with international trade regulations, sanctions, and internal controls.
Administrative and Financial Oversight: Maintain accurate records of trades and communications; support audits and reporting; assist in managing trade positions and updating trading PnL.
Financial Monitoring: Follow up on late payments and potential client defaults; monitor risk and credit terms.
Logistics and Reporting: Monitor port lineups and verify contractual documentation; report to key platform personnel.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: University Degree in Business or a related field.
Technical Knowledge: Sound knowledge of Kenya coffee grades and qualities; strong understanding of Cash and Futures Markets.
Market Awareness: Deep understanding of regional and global coffee supply and demand dynamics.
Economic and Financial Literacy: Good understanding of macro/microeconomics, finance, and accounting principles; good mathematical knowledge.
Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (formulation and modeling) and the Microsoft Office suite.
Soft Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills to handle diverse customer levels; ability to think quickly and work accurately under high pressure.
Language: Proficient in English.
Preferred: A background in agriculture is considered highly useful.
