The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the world's environmental agenda and promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system. They are seeking a senior-level Biodiversity Finance Consultant to lead global mapping initiatives and support international biodiversity targets.
Role Overview
The consultant will identify and map the landscape of biodiversity finance, including public, private, and blended finance initiatives. The purpose of this role is to identify key financial commitments, instruments, and stakeholders necessary to achieve global biodiversity frameworks, such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Responsibilities
Global Mapping: Review and map current biodiversity finance initiatives across the public and private sectors, including blended finance models.
Commitment Analysis: Identify key financial commitments, targets, instruments, and mechanisms relevant to biodiversity conservation.
Stakeholder Mapping: Provide a comprehensive overview of key actors, funders, intermediaries, and enabling mechanisms.
Reporting: Develop a Biodiversity Finance Mapping Report and maintain a database/spreadsheet of programs and relevant actors.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: A minimum of a Master's Degree in environmental finance, economics, biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, public policy, or a related field. Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree combined with two years of additional professional and academic experience may be accepted.
Experience: At least 7 years of professional experience in biodiversity finance, environmental economics, or related analytical work.
UN and GEF Knowledge: Prior experience with the UN system, Global Environment Facility (GEF) programming, or inter-agency analysis is required.
Technical Expertise: Familiarity with innovative finance mechanisms and biodiversity targets (e.g., CBD post-2020, Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework) is essential.
Soft Skills: Strong analytical, writing, and stakeholder engagement skills are highly desirable.
