Assistant Laboratory Technician I – Gross Anatomy

Role Overview

This is a middle-level technical position at Pwani University. The Assistant Laboratory Technician I (Gross Anatomy) is responsible for supporting the academic and research activities within the Gross Anatomy department, ensuring the efficient operation of laboratory facilities, and assisting both staff and students in practical learning environments. The appointment shall be on such terms and conditions as may be determined by the University Council from time to time.

Key Responsibilities

• Student Training and Instructional Support: Assist and train students on collecting, processing, and preservation of samples in the field and laboratory. Assist the Gross Anatomy lecturer in practical demonstrations and support the Gross Anatomy demonstrator in teaching and grading duties for practical sessions.
• Laboratory Operations: Maintain the Gross Anatomy laboratory and ensure storerooms and working areas are kept orderly and clean. Prepare reagents, preservative solutions, samples, and specimens for practical classes and examinations.
• Experimental and Assessment Support: Assemble supplies, construct apparatus, and set up classroom experiments and demonstrations. Set up OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and viva voce sessions for Gross Anatomy assessments.
• Research and Quality Management: Provide technical assistance to researchers. Prepare and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the laboratory and participate in quality management systems.
• Technical Maintenance: Troubleshoot machine errors and perform general maintenance and internal calibration of equipment.
• Administrative Duties: Assist in budget preparation and maintain an updated inventory for consumables and non-consumables. Safely store supplies and equipment and dispose of solutions and specimens according to established guidelines.
• Resource Mobilization: Participate in efforts to secure infrastructure grants, equipment grants, and student scholarships.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Academic Qualification: Must possess a Diploma in Gross Anatomy AND a Higher National Diploma in Gross Anatomy or Mortuary/Mortician Services (or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution).
• Professional Membership: Be a member of relevant professional bodies.
• Experience: Must have at least two (2) years of relevant work experience. Experience working in a higher institution of learning is an added advantage.
• Community Involvement: Demonstrate involvement in the community (e.g., as a member of BOG, SMC, etc.).
