Role Overview
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the UN agency for human settlements mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. The Urban Economy Branch of UN-Habitat works to promote the capabilities of local governments.
Under the overall supervision of the Senior Programme Management Officer/Project Manager, the Assistant Field Coordinator will provide technical assistance to county governments, municipal boards, and the County Program Coordination Team (CPCT) of the Kenya Urban Support Program (KUSP2). The role focuses on field coordination and technical support for urban development objectives, specifically under the Water, Habitat, and Resilience (WHR) component.
Responsibilities and Duties
Technical Assistance & Coordination: Provide technical assistance to county governments and municipal boards in line with KUSP2-WHR objectives.
Field Management: Support field coordination at the county and municipal levels, including the technical and logistical planning of field activities and missions.
Stakeholder Liaison: Facilitate coordination among municipal boards and various partners regarding urban development goals.
Reporting: Coordinate and report on field activities as assigned by project management.
Office Administration: Assist with the daily administration of field office operations.
Capacity Building: Support the design, implementation, and documentation of training and capacity-building activities under Urban Institutional Grants (UIGs).
Project Design: Provide technical support to local partners and authorities in the conceptualization and implementation of UIG and Urban Development Grant (UDG) projects.
Requirements and Qualifications
Academic Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Architecture, Urban/Town Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Management, Civil Engineering, Development Studies, Land Surveying, Urban Economy, Economics, or related fields. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's) combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of progressive experience in infrastructure and basic services delivery, urban planning, or community-based development, preferably in a Humanitarian-Development Nexus context.
Writing Skills: Proven experience in research and technical writing is required.
Multi-agency Experience: Ability to work in multi-agency settings is desirable.
Sector Knowledge: Experience with local governments or the public sector is an added advantage.
UN Experience: Previous work experience within the United Nations System or similar international organizations is desirable.
Regional Context: Experience in humanitarian-development programming within the Horn of Africa refugee management context is highly desirable.
