Burhani Engineers Ltd is an established EPC Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering company operating in the East and Central Africa region with offices in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kampala, and Dar-es-Salaam. The Assistant Accountant will be responsible for managing day-to-day accounting operations, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting financial reporting, ensuring compliance with statutory and internal controls, and providing leadership and guidance to the accounts team, particularly on operational accounting activities within the engineering and projects environment.
Key Responsibilities
Core Accounting Functions
Manage and execute the month-end and year-end close processes by ensuring all accounts are reconciled accurately and promptly.
Manage Accounts Payable (A/P) by verifying documentation, obtaining internal approvals, preparing payment runs, and ensuring timely payments.
Maintain accurate records of accounts payable and receivable balances and transactions.
Perform weekly and monthly reviews for bank reconciliation, corporate credit cards, and petty cash.
Financial Reporting, Audit & Analysis
Preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
Support budgeting and forecasting activities, including variance analysis.
Provide data and analysis to support management decision-making.
Ensure compliance with local tax regulations and accounting standards.
Liaise with auditors and tax consultants during audits and reviews.
Team Leadership & Supervision
Coordinate daily activities of Assistant Accountants and Accounts Assistants.
Review accounting work for accuracy and completeness.
Provide guidance, coaching, and on-the-job training.
Ensure timelines for reporting and reconciliations are met.
Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Systems & Process Improvement
Maintain and update accounting systems and databases.
Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve operational efficiency.
Support implementation of new financial tools or ERP systems.
Administrative & Cross-Functional Support
Maintain organized financial documentation and filing systems.
Work closely with procurement, sales, and HR departments to ensure smooth operations.
Provide financial guidance and support to non-financial staff and respond to queries.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Professional Certification: CPA certification is required.
Experience: Minimum of 6 years in a similar accounting role, preferably in the Engineering sector.
Software: Familiarity with accounting software like Tally or ERP systems.
Skills and Competencies
