Artisan Mechanical III (General Fitting, Machining/Turning, Welding, and Blacksmithing)

Responsibilities

General Fitting

• Participate in the assembly of machinery and equipment based on technical specifications.
• Align and connect mechanical components to ensure structural integrity.
• Test machinery to verify proper functioning and performance.
• Clean and lubricate machinery components for optimal maintenance.
• Assist in replacing defective parts such as bearings, gears, valves, and pumps.
• Perform metal cutting and fabrication tasks for repairs.
• Collect and record data related to general fitting inventory and services.

Machining and Turning

• Operate machining tools to perform turning, grinding, milling, facing, boring, drilling, and threading operations on metal workpieces.
• Securely load raw materials (metal bars, rods, billets) into lathes for machining.
• Set up manual or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines according to engineering drawings and specifications.
• Install and maintain cutting tools, toolholders, and work-holding fixtures such as chucks and collets.
• Sharpen or replace damaged cutting tools to maintain precision.
• Document machining service records and inventory data.

Welding

• Cut, shape, and assemble materials using welding machines.
• Conduct visual inspections and technical tests (dye-penetrant, ultrasonic, pressure) to verify weld strength and integrity.
• Perform routine welding maintenance works.
• Maintain records and inventory for welding equipment and projects.

Blacksmithing

• Heat metal in a forge to malleable temperatures and shape components as required.
• Join metal components while maintaining alignment, structural integrity, and aesthetic standards.
• Apply heat treatment processes to enhance the mechanical properties of metal parts.
• Inspect and test metal works for dimensional accuracy according to specifications.
• Maintain forging tools and equipment to ensure longevity.
• Collect and collate data for blacksmithing service records.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Must possess a Government Trade Test II in any of the following disciplines: General Fitting, Turning, Welding, or Blacksmithing from a recognized institution.
• Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate.
