Job Description
This is an entry-level training grade for the Artisan Mechanical cadre within the Machakos County Public Service. An officer at this level works under the guidance of a designated supervisor to perform various mechanical tasks, including machinery assembly, precision machining, welding, and metal shaping. The role is pivotal in ensuring the maintenance and optimal performance of county machinery and structural metal components.
Responsibilities
General Fitting
Participate in the assembly of machinery and equipment based on technical specifications.
Align and connect mechanical components to ensure structural integrity.
Test machinery to verify proper functioning and performance.
Clean and lubricate machinery components for optimal maintenance.
Assist in replacing defective parts such as bearings, gears, valves, and pumps.
Perform metal cutting and fabrication tasks for repairs.
Collect and record data related to general fitting inventory and services.
Machining and Turning
Operate machining tools to perform turning, grinding, milling, facing, boring, drilling, and threading operations on metal workpieces.
Securely load raw materials (metal bars, rods, billets) into lathes for machining.
Set up manual or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines according to engineering drawings and specifications.
Install and maintain cutting tools, toolholders, and work-holding fixtures such as chucks and collets.
Sharpen or replace damaged cutting tools to maintain precision.
Document machining service records and inventory data.
Welding
Cut, shape, and assemble materials using welding machines.
Conduct visual inspections and technical tests (dye-penetrant, ultrasonic, pressure) to verify weld strength and integrity.
Perform routine welding maintenance works.
Maintain records and inventory for welding equipment and projects.
Blacksmithing
Heat metal in a forge to malleable temperatures and shape components as required.
Join metal components while maintaining alignment, structural integrity, and aesthetic standards.
Apply heat treatment processes to enhance the mechanical properties of metal parts.
Inspect and test metal works for dimensional accuracy according to specifications.
Maintain forging tools and equipment to ensure longevity.
Collect and collate data for blacksmithing service records.
Qualifications and Requirements
Must possess a Government Trade Test II in any of the following disciplines: General Fitting, Turning, Welding, or Blacksmithing from a recognized institution.
Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate.
