Role Overview
This role provides specialized veterinary expertise to assess, standardize, and strengthen canine health systems across humanitarian demining programmes, ensuring consistent operational quality and partner capacity. Reporting to the Global Technical Advisor or a designated Programme representative, the Veterinarian ensures the quality of animal health and veterinary support provided by implementing partners.
Key Responsibilities
Assessment and Quality Assurance
Conduct thorough assessments of existing partner capacity related to all components of animal care.
Assess the technical requirements and viability of Canine health support (EDD, NDD, and HSDD) provided by implementing partners.
Provide findings and analysis for internal and donor reports.
Draft and initiate quality assurance measures regarding animal support and veterinary health services.
Procurement and Infrastructure Support
Collaborate with the Senior Procurement team to support procurement planning and specification drafting for animal health matters.
Identify technical requirements for the procurement of dog food, medicine, and equipment, including scoping suppliers and ensuring mandatory laboratory checks for food.
Work with the Infrastructure team to design and layout facility components required for animal health, both for new constructions and upgrades.
Training and Specialized Procedures
Collaborate with dog handlers and trainers to improve animal care processes and procedures.
Develop technical requirements for Canine health services.
Provide recommendations and plans for rehoming dogs unable to perform their functions.
Monitoring and Reporting
Produce comprehensive reports compiling recommendations on operational requirements.
Conduct routine reviews of animal health metrics and facility audits, including monthly health check summaries and food storage assessments.
Requirements and Experience
Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s) in Veterinary Medicine or related fields with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, OR a First-level University degree (Bachelor’s) with 7 years of relevant experience.
Professional Experience: Minimum 5 years of professional experience in veterinary medicine.
Contextual Experience: Experience working in conflict, post-conflict, or humanitarian operations is required.
Specialized Knowledge: Proven experience working with dog trainers and handlers, supporting animal care plans, and providing recommendations on animal care procurement and infrastructure design.
