Job Description
Role Overview
The Trade Development Officer I (Weight and Measures Officer) is responsible for coordinating weights and measures services in the field to ensure effective service delivery and safe trade practices within Nandi County. The officer serves as a regulatory authority, ensuring that weighing and measuring equipment used in trade is accurate and that both traders and consumers comply with established legal metrology standards.
Key Responsibilities
Field Coordination: Coordinate weights and measures services in the field to ensure effective service delivery and safe trade practices.
Equipment Regulation: Control and regulate the accuracy and manner of use of weighing and measuring equipment used in trade.
Public Awareness: Develop and execute a public sensitization schedule to educate consumers and members of the public on the importance of accurate measures.
Legal Compliance: Ensure compliance with legal obligations under Section 27 of the Weights and Measures Act before commencing verification and stamping programs.
Complaint Management: Receive, analyze, and investigate all complaints reported under the Weights and Measures Act.
Verification & Stamping: Verify and stamp traders' weighing and measuring equipment to ensure the accuracy of quantities delivered.
Enforcement: Investigate complaints and handle the prosecution of cases involving weighing, quality, and the origin of goods.
Research & Testing: Carry out research in specific areas of legal metrology and consumer protection, including testing samples and articles submitted by stakeholders.
Regulatory Control: Regulate the sale of goods in terms of quantity (weight, measure, or number) as specified in the regulations.
Requirements for Appointment
A Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Physics, Metrology, Computer Science, or any other related degree from a recognized university.
Must be a Gazetted inspector of weights and measures.
Must possess relevant knowledge in legal metrology.
