This role involves serving as the key editorial leader for breaking and daily news coverage across Sub-Saharan Africa for Thomson Reuters. The editor is responsible for setting editorial priorities, leading a cross-format team, and ensuring fast, accurate, and impactful coverage of breaking and daily news throughout the region, adhering strictly to Reuters’ standards and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Set editorial priorities for breaking and daily news across all formats, in conjunction with regional editor and bureau chiefs.
- Lead and coordinate a cross-format team to deliver fast, accurate, and impactful coverage.
- Ensure stories meet Reuters’ standards and client expectations across platforms.
- Make rapid editorial decisions under time pressure.
- Collaborate with regional and global editors to shape coverage and strategy.
- Mentor and coach staff, fostering a high-performance and inclusive newsroom culture.
- Drive innovation and experimentation in breaking news coverage.
Required Qualifications and Experience
To be our Sub-Saharan Africa Breaking & Daily News Editor, you will have:
Qualifications:
- BA/BSc/HND qualification.
Experience and Skills:
- Proven experience in breaking news journalism, ideally in a global news organisation.
- Strong editorial judgement and decision-making under pressure.
- Deep expertise running breaking news in either text or visuals journalism, with a good understanding of the other disciplines.
- Experience of dealing with staff safety in hostile environments.
- Experience managing diverse teams, sometimes across locations.
- Understanding of AI tools and their application in newsroom workflows.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills.
- Commitment to Reuters Trust Principles of independence, integrity, and freedom from bias.
