Human Rights Watch is seeking a Solutions Technologist to implement and maintain tools and processes related to human rights research. This role involves bridging technology and advocacy by supporting the acquisition and analysis of data for investigations across various thematic and geographic areas, automating day-to-day research processes, and ensuring that technical solutions conform to security and safety standards. You will work closely with the Digital Investigations Lab and other researchers to integrate findings into Human Rights Watch research and present information accurately.
Responsibilities
Technology Integration and Growth: Implement and maintain new and existing research tools, contribute to the growth of the technology tool base, and write clear documentation to mainstream technology across the organization.
Data Acquisition and Analysis: Support the acquisition of data through scraping public information, creating machine-readable data via OCR, and finding hard-to-access data. Develop guidance on secure and ethical data acquisition.
Security Coordination: Collaborate with the Information Security and Technology department to ensure development processes are followed and tools conform to internal security standards.
Automation: Build technical solutions to automate research processes using scripts, open-source tools, Power Automate, Power BI, and machine learning techniques.
Research Integration: Analyze data alongside researchers, write up findings, and present information on GitHub or the HRW website.
Global Collaboration: Coordinate with colleagues globally who use non-traditional techniques like remote sensing and open-source research methodologies.
Workflow Adaptation: Engage with regional and thematic divisions to adapt technical solutions to their specific requirements.
Best Practices: Help set and follow internal standards for data storage, discovery, verification, and analysis.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: A level of education that, when combined with your professional experience, demonstrates capability for the role. Academic degrees in computer science or security certifications are encouraged.
Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience in software development, data-systems design, or information technology is required.
Sector Experience: Preference for experience working with international human rights, journalism, or related organizations.
