The University of Nairobi is seeking to recruit a Senior Research Fellow specialized in Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. This role is designed for a technical leader capable of managing complex programs and applying advanced digital and AI solutions to critical public health priorities and policy needs. The successful candidate will lead multi-institutional initiatives and drive research in full-stack software engineering and high-performance computing.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead multi-institutional or regional technical initiatives focused on software engineering and AI/ML.
- Apply AI and machine learning techniques to real-world, large-scale datasets, particularly within health, development, or policy settings.
- Design and operationalize comprehensive data governance, privacy, and security frameworks.
- Develop system architectures and manage API designs for complex technical projects.
- Utilize Cloud and/or high-performance computing environments for computational research.
- Engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to align digital solutions with public health and policy requirements.
- Conduct research and development in full-stack software engineering using Python, R, JavaScript, and modern web frameworks.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: A PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Computational Biology, or a closely related quantitative field.
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in software engineering, AI/ML, data science, or computational research, including a track record of leading complex technical programs.
- Technical Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in full-stack engineering (Python, R, JavaScript, modern web frameworks), system architecture, and API design.
- Domain Knowledge: Proven experience applying AI/ML to large datasets in health or policy settings and designing data governance frameworks.
- Skills: Excellent communication and writing skills, with the ability to lead regional technical initiatives and engage diverse stakeholders.
