Garissa University (formerly Garissa University College) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Senior Library Assistant II (System Librarian), Grade 8. This technical role is responsible for the administration and maintenance of the university's library systems, ensuring optimal performance and access to digital resources.
Responsibilities
System Administration: Administer and maintain the KOHA Integrated Library Management System (ILMS), including system configuration, updates, backups, and troubleshooting.
E-Resource Management: Manage and integrate all library e-resources to ensure seamless access, authentication, and discoverability for users.
Institutional Repository: Develop, implement, and manage the Institutional Repository using platforms such as DSpace or Greenstone, ensuring proper metadata standards and digital preservation.
Technical Support: Provide technical support and training to library staff and users on automated library systems and digital platforms.
Infrastructure Oversight: Identify, recommend, and support appropriate library hardware and software solutions, including network administration and system security.
Digital Presence: Maintain and update the library website and other digital access platforms to enhance online service delivery.
Reporting: Prepare system performance reports, maintain documentation, and advise management on emerging trends in library automation.
Requirements
A Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Studies from a recognized institution.
At least five (5) years of working experience in a well-established library or information centre.
Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C (Plain) or its equivalent, including at least a C- (minus) in Mathematics, History, English, or Kiswahili.
Must be computer literate with demonstrated experience working in an automated library.
Proficiency in identifying suitable hardware/software for library systems and skills in network administration.
Familiarity with website authoring tools such as HTML, Apache, MySQL, Perl, and Linux.
Specific ability to administer the KOHA library management system and digital systems like DSpace and Greenstone.
Knowledge of institutional repository issues, policies, and service models is an added advantage.
Must fulfill the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya.
