Job Description
The Senior Information Systems Assistant at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is responsible for providing high-level technical support and administration for the organization's network and communication infrastructure. This G7 position involves overseeing network operations, unified communications, and ensuring system security and performance within a complex multi-tenant environment.
Responsibilities
Network Operations and Administration (LAN/WAN/IPT): Support all aspects of network hardware and software within WLAN, LAN, WAN (including MPLS environments), and unified communications infrastructure.
Security Management: Manage, administer, and maintain the network firewall, VPNs, and overall network security protocols.
System Maintenance: Maintain all wireless controllers, access points, switches, and routers at recommended operating system and security patch levels.
Monitoring and Optimization: Ensure 24x7 operations and monitoring of assigned systems. Identify the need for new systems or re-engineering of existing ones.
Backup and Documentation: Implement backups of all switch/router configurations and maintain comprehensive documentation for WLAN/LAN/WAN/IPT configurations pertinent to operations and system administration.
Performance Reporting: Collect statistics on the performance and reliability of wireless and wired network infrastructure and produce pertinent reports.
User Support and Training: Provide technical advice to network users, coordinate user support services, and conduct periodic training sessions to ensure effective use of hardware.
Unified Communications: Act as the technical escalation point for unified communications issues. Design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot Cisco Unified Communications Systems, including voice gateways, devices, and IP phones.
Policy and Guidelines: Set guidelines and principles for problem reporting, resolution, and follow-up.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Completion of high school diploma or equivalent is required. Supplemental courses or a technical certificate in information technology or a related field is mandatory.
Experience: A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant and progressively responsible experience in the information technology field is required.
Educational Offset: The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to eight (8) years for candidates who possess a first-level University degree.
Specialized Knowledge: Required experience in network security, Wireless Networks, LAN/WAN, and IPT systems design, implementation, and operation.
Desirable Skills: Working experience in MPLS network deployment, routing and switching, troubleshooting network-related problems, and network security within a multi-tenant environment is highly desirable.
