Strathmore University is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to lead advanced data science workstreams. The role is responsible for driving AI model development, benchmarking, safety testing, and applied analytics. The successful candidate will implement data ingestion frameworks and contribute significantly to the university's data architecture, ensuring it meets performance and efficiency KPIs. This position requires a strategic thinker who can work across departments to identify requirements and implement new technologies to enhance data science capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Data Pipelines and Reporting
Contribute to the creation of data architecture based on projected data needs and efficiency KPIs.
Scope and stage work into well-defined milestones to ensure efficient delivery.
Provide technical advice and weight on decisions impacting the entire project codebase and system architecture.
Design and build end-to-end solutions with guidance from subject matter experts.
Data Science Strategy and Planning
Support the development and implementation of organizational data science strategies.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize data requirements.
Recommend and implement emerging technologies to enhance data science capabilities.
Data Quality and Governance
Ensure data accuracy and reliability through profiling, cleansing, and validation.
Maintain databases and data systems while collaborating with governance teams to establish quality standards.
Research and implement best practices in data governance trends.
Advanced Analytics and Modeling
Model, design, and implement AI algorithms using diverse data sources.
Design rigorous evaluation pipelines for AI models, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented systems.
Develop and maintain benchmarking datasets for standardized model assessment.
Lead technical safety testing for AI systems, focusing on hallucination detection and appropriate content identification.
Design and analyze experiments such as A/B testing and persona-based trials to assess model usability and performance.
Work with Data Engineers and MLOps Engineers to ensure pipelines are reproducible and auditable.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Management
Gather business requirements and analytical needs from internal and external stakeholders.
Provide training to end-users on utilizing data science tools and interpreting outputs.
Liaise with software development teams to ensure data needs are addressed in all projects.
Project Management
Monitor project progress, manage priorities, and adhere to documentation procedures.
Seek stakeholder feedback to gauge satisfaction and ensure quality outcomes.
Requirements and Experience
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related quantitative field.
Experience: At least 5 years of progressive experience in data science, advanced analytics, or applied research roles.
Technical Depth: Demonstrated responsibility for complex analytical or modeling tasks and experience with AI evaluation pipelines.
