Senior Data Engineer

The Senior Data Engineer at Strathmore University is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining robust data infrastructure and pipelines. The role involves implementing data ingestion frameworks and managing heterogeneous data sources to support AI, machine learning, and analytical storage solutions. ### Responsibilities: Design and maintain robust ingestion pipelines for soil, weather, agronomic, geospatial, and contextual datasets; develop scalable ETL/ELT workflows to transform raw data into structured formats; ensure pipelines support batch and near-real-time processing; implement data versioning and lineage tracking for reproducibility. Design and manage cloud-native architectures including data lakes and warehouses; optimize storage for performance and cost; support pipeline deployment across various environments; collaborate with platform teams to ensure interoperability standards. Implement automated quality checks and validation rules; enforce governance requirements like access controls and audit logging; ensure compliance with data protection and consent frameworks; mitigate reliability risks. Prepare data for AI and LLM-based advisory systems, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines; support model evaluation and experimentation; contribute to MLOps workflows by automating pipelines and data versioning. Produce clear technical documentation covering data architectures and operational procedures. ### Qualifications and Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related technical field. At least 5 years of professional experience in data engineering with responsibility for complex data platforms. Strong experience in designing ETL/ELT pipelines for large, heterogeneous datasets. Proficiency in Python and SQL.
