Role Overview
The Senior Business Development – Mining role is central to PowerGen’s expansion within the mining sector. The primary focus is originating new opportunities and building a robust pipeline of mining-sector Commercial & Industrial (C&I) energy projects. The successful candidate will leverage established industry relationships to generate qualified leads, facilitate key client introductions, and strengthen PowerGen’s overall market presence in the mining segment.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Pipeline Development & Opportunity Origination: Identification of new mining-sector leads and progression of qualified opportunities.
- Proposal & Commercial Impact: High-quality, competitive proposal submissions based on client feedback.
- Project Support & Execution Readiness: Accurate preparation of business cases, cost estimates, and documentation for handover to execution teams.
- Relationship Management: Strong relationships with mining clients and strategic influence with key stakeholders.
- Revenue & Deal Closure: Tracking the value of signed contracts and secured deals.
- Financial Alignment: Ensuring opportunities meet financial, regulatory, and strategic bankability criteria.
- Market Intelligence: Providing insights on competitor activity and market trends to guide product strategy.
- Lead Conversion Efficiency: High percentage conversion of leads into proposals and projects.
- Customer Satisfaction: Positive feedback from mining clients on engagement and responsiveness.
Responsibilities and Activities
- Strategic Leadership: Lead the business development strategy for the mining sector, driving pipeline growth and market expansion.
- Opportunity Development: Identify and analyze new mining opportunities, prepare business cases, proposals, budgets, and cost estimates.
- Stakeholder Management: Oversee client engagement, maintain relationships, and support revenue generation through innovative business models.
- Market Analysis: Gather and analyze market insights and client feedback to refine solutions and value propositions.
- Process Improvement: Continuously enhance business development processes, tools, and reporting mechanisms.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field; a Master’s degree (MBA or relevant field) is preferred.
- Experience: 7+ years of business development or project development experience in Africa, specifically within the mining or energy sectors.
- Networking: Strong network of senior management and executives within the African mining sector.
- Commercial Acumen: Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting, financial modeling, and project economics.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of mining operations, energy supply for industrial clients, and relevant regulatory landscapes.
- Communication: Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Soft Skills: Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects, and deliver results in fast-paced environments.
- Travel: Willingness to travel frequently to client sites.
Preferred Skills
- Experience developing industrial-scale energy projects for mining or C&I clients.
- Understanding of project finance and investment screening processes.
- Fluency in French or other relevant local languages is a plus.
- Hands-on experience in renewable energy or power sector project development.
