About the Role
AGL (Africa Global Logistics) is seeking a Senior Accountant to join its team in Nairobi, Kenya. The position plays a key role in tax compliance, financial reporting, supplier accounts management, intercompany balances, and overall team leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Tax
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of all basic tax requirements and changes in tax regulations affecting day-to-day entries and transactions in the company's books.
- Ensure timely preparation and review of various tax returns to be submitted to tax authorities, including but not limited to VAT, PAYE, and Withholding Tax.
- Prepare responses to tax authorities regarding any queries on tax filings.
Posting & Vouchers
- Review supplier vouchers for proper coding and allocation.
- Ensure all costs are adequately supported by proper documentation (e.g., LPOs, Delivery Notes, etc.).
- Ensure all invoices are properly approved as per the approval matrix.
Review of Standing Charges
- Run standing charges every month.
- Match prepaid and accrued expenses every month.
- Propose reviews of standing charges as applicable to ensure all costs are properly monitored.
- Provide monthly explanations for accounts (ensuring accounts from class 1 to 4 & 6 to 8 are fully accurate and explainable).
- Ensure all other provisions taken on a monthly basis are accurate, reviewed, and posted on time.
Control Supplier Payments / Accounts
- Ensure all supplier invoices are tracked and dispatched for approval on time.
- Ensure supplier reconciliations are accurate and signed accordingly with explanations on reconciling items.
- Review, control, and validate supplier remittances in IRIS.
- Review supplier balances on a monthly basis to ensure no suppliers are in debit.
- Review long-outstanding unpaid invoices.
- Ensure all supplier accounts are properly matched immediately on remittance.
End Month Closing & Reporting
- Ensure timely and accurate closure to meet regional and HQ timelines.
- Perform the first review of the general ledger to verify that all items have been properly and correctly posted.
- Liaise with payroll, workshop, and invoicing teams to ensure integration of all items.
- Complete reporting packages required by management within set timelines.
Intercompany Balances
- Ensure monthly settlement and no long-outstanding items.
- Ensure proper reconciliation is conducted before payment.
Additional Duties & Team Management
- Relieve the Financial Controller on specific tasks while on leave or as assigned from time to time.
- Provide leadership and guidance for the accounting team, promoting teamwork, best practices, and excellence.
- Provide support on internal controls implementation and monitoring.
- Provide support during internal and external audits.
- Provide support/coordination during end-month stock takes.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Commerce or a related business field.
- CPA(K) qualification.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar role.
- At least 3 years of experience working in freight forwarding.
