Job Description
The Machakos County Public Service Board is seeking a Principal Engineering Technician (Automotive). An officer at this level will be deployed at either the Mechanical or Motor vehicles/plant-electrical functional areas, overseeing technical operations, ensuring safety compliance, and mentoring junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Functional Area
Implementing policies, regulations, standards, guidelines, and strategies pertaining to the mechanical maintenance of vehicles.
Diagnosing and analyzing motor vehicle mechanical parts, components, and systems.
Supervising mechanical maintenance of motor vehicles and technical operations in the workshop.
Coordinating inspection of mechanical parts/systems for compliance with quality standards and specifications.
Supervising pre-delivery inspections of automobiles, bicycles, and other machinery installations.
Supervising inspection of garages for approval by the chief engineer and suitability tests for drivers.
Verifying spare parts and accessories.
Carrying out valuations of motor vehicles and preparing relevant reports.
Conducting pre- and post-repair inspections for costing and quality control.
Supervising inspection of motor vehicles involved in accidents for repairs and investigations.
Ensuring technical compliance, safety, and quality control in automotive mechanical engineering services.
Participating in the preparation of tender documents, development of specifications, and technical evaluation.
Preparing technical progress reports and maintaining up-to-date records and inventory.
Preparing work plans and schedules while mentoring staff under their supervision.
Motor Vehicles/Plant-Electrical Functional Area
Implementing policies and strategies regarding automotive and plant electrical systems.
Supervising the servicing, maintenance, inspection, and testing of electrical systems on motor vehicles, plant, and equipment.
Supervising the installation and maintenance of communication systems and accessories.
Diagnosing electrical faults and interpreting electrical wiring sketches and diagrams.
Supervising installation of electrical components and pre-delivery inspections.
Verifying electrical spare parts and accessories.
Taking part in the preparation of tender documents and technical evaluations.
Preparing technical reports and keeping up-to-date records and inventory for electrical systems.
Preparing work plans and schedules and providing mentorship to staff.
Requirements for Appointment
At least twelve (12) years of cumulative relevant work experience, three (3) of which should have been in the grade of Senior Engineering Technician (Automotive).
Technician Part III in Automotive Engineering or its equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution OR a Diploma in Automotive Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
Registration by the Kenya Engineering Technology Registration Board (KETRB) as a candidate Engineering Technician.
Valid annual practicing license from the Kenya Engineering Technology Registration Board.
Certificate in a supervisory skills course lasting not less than two (2) weeks from a recognized institution.
Valid Driving License.
Proficiency in computer applications.
Demonstrated merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
