Post-Doctoral Researcher

Key Responsibilities

• Research Conduct and Management: Help develop, conduct, and report on a specific set of research objectives. This includes managing budgets, conducting literature reviews, preparing ethics submissions, developing research protocols, refining mixed-methods data collection tools, coordinating fieldwork, supervising research assistants, analysing qualitative and quantitative data, and authoring first-author publications.
• Scientific Expertise: Apply theoretical and practical expertise in empirical ethics, benefit sharing, equity, justice, power-relations in health and research systems, organisational functioning, health system resilience, and evaluating complex interventions.
• Capacity Building: Support capacity building in empirical ethics and health systems research by mentoring a small team, supervising Master's and PhD level researchers, and organizing training/skills-sharing meetings.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with key stakeholders in Kenya (including KWTRP managers, senior researchers, ethics committees, science advisors, health managers, community representatives) and international scientific networks, advisors, and funders.
• Communication: Communicate research goals and findings to diverse audiences through presentations, talks, publications, social media, and web content.
• Ethical Standards: Ensure the ethical conduct of research while fostering an inclusive, supportive research culture.

Vacancy Requirements

• A relevant PhD/DPhil in health-related fields such as empirical ethics, anthropology, public health, social sciences, philosophy, health system research, public/community engagement, human behaviour, or psychology.
• Demonstrated experience planning and executing empirical ethics or health systems studies, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
• Proven ability to manage complex empirical studies, supervise research assistants, and ensure data quality.
• Evidence of scientific output with a track record of producing and publishing high-quality, theory-driven research.
• Experience collaborating with international research Principal Investigators (PIs) and frontline health or research staff.
• Demonstrated interest in equity in health systems and research conduct; experience working in Kenya is an added advantage.
• High level of proficiency in qualitative analysis software (such as NVivo); basic quantitative analysis skills are desirable.
• Strong organization, project management, and multitasking skills under tight deadlines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write for scientific journals and present clearly to non-academic audiences.
• Ability to travel to remote areas within Kenya for data collection or supervision, and willingness to travel internationally for multi-country partnerships.
