Job Description
The Perioperative Nurse provides specialized clinical care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing practice throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. The role is responsible for maintaining high standards of patient safety, infection prevention, surgical asepsis, accurate documentation, and compliance with clinical protocols and regulatory requirements. The Perioperative Nurse collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthetists, theatre staff, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless surgical workflow, optimal patient outcomes, and efficient theatre operations. The position plays a critical role in supporting quality improvement initiatives, risk management, equipment and instrument accountability, and adherence to hospital policies and operating theatre standards.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Ensure pre-op assessment is complete, including the surgical checklist and nursing documentation; note any discrepancies and inform concerned staff.
Receive patients prior to surgery, obtain reports from the accompanying nurse, and perform pre-op checklists.
Manage pre-operative care of elective cases in the operating room and recovery of stable patients post-anesthesia.
Assist with intubation and extubation of patients in the recovery room and operating room.
Communicate with anesthetists and primary teams regarding patient issues and shifting plans.
Provide care to ventilated patients and facilitate safe transfer to alternate levels of care upon approval.
Effectively use and maintain equipment including cardiac monitors and diathermy.
Promptly report clinical and non-clinical unusual findings/incidences to the nurse manager, team leader, or surgeons.
Identify patient and family education needs and implement appropriate teaching.
Perform pain assessments and initiate analgesia as per protocol and doctor's orders.
Ensure nursing documentation is timely, comprehensive, and complete, reflecting nursing quality standards.
Maintain a safe environment by following infection control and hospital safety policies.
Coordinate theater lists with the OR coordinator and assist physicians during procedures in scrub or circulating roles.
Ensure all specimens are properly labeled and delivered to the lab in a timely manner.
Recognize pre-arrest or arrest states and initiate Basic Life Support (BLS).
Dispose of clinical and non-clinical waste safely in accordance with guidelines.
Administer medication safely and monitor patient responses.
Ensure judicious use of resources and accurate billing of ward stock/consumables.
Prepare for and participate in health talks, Continuous Medical Education (CME) events, and clinical audits.
Requirements and Qualifications
Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) or Kenya Registered Nursing (KRN).
Higher Diploma in Perioperative Nursing.
Must be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya with a Valid Practicing License.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a busy Operating Room (OR).
Experience providing direct nursing care in surgical cases within the last 1 year is required.
Must have valid ACLS and BLS certificates.
