The Nurse Instructor for OR Recovery at Aga Khan University Hospital is responsible for leading clinical excellence through the development, implementation, and monitoring of unit-based clinical policies. The role combines clinical supervision, staff mentorship, and the advancement of nursing education to ensure high-quality patient care and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Supervisory Duties
Lead the team in developing, implementing, and monitoring unit-based clinical policies and procedures.
Identify, define, and monitor unit-based clinical indicators.
Oversee continuing education and training for nurses within the assigned unit.
Collaborate with the nurse manager and lead physician to initiate innovative, evidence-based strategies for patient care improvement.
Foster a culture of safe practice and participate in multidisciplinary clinical rounds.
Evaluate care outcomes through Mortality and Morbidity discussions, clinical incidence trends, and clinical indicators.
Establish and monitor delivery of care according to established standards.
Conduct regular evaluations of nurses and design individual development plans.
Maintain staff files and learning materials at the unit level.
Submit monthly reports on learning activities and spot checks to relevant stakeholders.
Act as a resource person for the care team regarding clinical matters, including infection control and documentation.
Supervision of Nursing Staff
Conduct daily rounds to assess patient health status and identify care needs.
Review patient allocations to ensure assignments match nurse competence.
Provide bedside assistance in patient assessment and intervention planning.
Guide nurses in evaluating the effectiveness of care through re-assessments.
Ensure patients and families receive appropriate teaching regarding conditions and treatments.
Participate in discharge planning and coordinate with families and significant others.
Continuing Education
Ensure adequate orientation and settling of new nursing staff.
Conduct regular skill checks at the bedside to identify training needs and design individual programs.
Design and implement plans for continuing unit-based learning.
Utilize clinical incidents as learning opportunities to plan corrective and preventive actions.
Maintain records of all learning activities and individual participation.
Motivate nurses toward individual professional growth and maintain effective professional networks.
Documentation
Evaluate nursing documents for appropriateness in capturing patient information.
Train staff on documentation policies and the use of nursing forms and charts.
Ensure compliance through spot-checks on initial assessments, vital signs, patient education records, fluid charts, and progress notes.
Nursing Research & Quality Initiatives
Lead unit-based Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects and Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC).
Guide staff in initiating and participating in unit-based and hospital-wide nursing research projects.
Requirements
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BScN).
Minimum 5 years of continuous nursing experience in an A&E unit within an acute care hospital.
Registered Nurse with current licensure from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Certification in ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support).
Proficiency in basic computer skills.
Demonstrated expert knowledge and skills in the chosen area of work.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to teach and cascade information across all levels.
