Job Description
AAR Hospital is a 140-bed Level 5 private referral hospital situated along Kiambu Road, adjacent to Karura Forest. This role provides managerial and clinical leadership during night shifts, ensuring a seamless link between nursing management and hospital operations.
Job Purpose
The Nursing Supervisor Reliever duties include provision of managerial and clinical links between the nurse manager and department direction in their absence, and the executive-on-call. Additionally, this position will include knowledge of utilization review rules and regulations as they assist physicians and staff in assigning admission status.
Duties and Responsibilities
Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Assess patient care requirements on each unit by making rounds in the Emergency Department (ED) and all other hospital areas.
Assess the acuity of care required by patients in relation to staffing arrangements and nursing ratios.
Develop and implement staffing plans for shifts based on patient acuity, census, and available staff.
Serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems.
Assist staff to efficiently utilize staffing resources to meet patient care requirements and other professional responsibilities.
Provide for immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to appropriate managers and directors.
Respond to emergency situations (Rapid Response Team, Code Blue) and assist as necessary.
Act as a resource in identifying and/or solving administrative/operational problems for clinical staff.
Proactively anticipate potential problems that may occur on shifts and set priorities accordingly.
Work collaboratively with nursing and allied staff to solve problems in a fair, consistent manner.
Contact representatives of departments not presently in the hospital for assistance with problem-solving when needed.
Interpret and ensure adherence to AAR Hospital and nursing philosophy, policies, and procedures.
Report significant incidents, family concerns, equipment issues, or utility outages to the administrator-on-call.
Obtain materials/supplies from stores for patient care when departments are closed at night.
Provide support, guidance, and feedback to staff, identifying continuing education needs.
Consistently follow established safety and infection control procedures and intervene in unsafe situations.
Assist physicians and staff in admission criteria for assigning admission status.
Enhance and evaluate nursing practice according to hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
Manage, monitor, and evaluate professional and clinical standards ensuring evidence-based care.
Update patient records in the hospital HIMs systems and ensure accurate billing and cost control.
Achieve continuous professional development (CPD) targets.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education: Higher diploma or Degree in nursing recognized by the Nursing Council of Kenya. Leadership and management training is an added advantage.
Professional Certification: Updated BLS/ACLS certificate.
Licensing: Current annual nurse practice license issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Experience: Minimum of 7 years’ experience post-registration, with at least 5 years in a senior Nurse, team leader position, or similar leadership role.
