We are seeking a News Editor for the Great Lakes region to lead our editorial vision and ensure high-quality reporting that reflects our diverse audience.
Role Overview
As the News Editor, you will be responsible for defining the editorial direction of BBC Great Lakes. You will ensure content upholds high standards of impartiality and accuracy while identifying and responding to regional issues and trends. This role involves managing a team of journalists, driving digital growth, and collaborating with global BBC departments to synchronize coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the editorial vision of BBC Great Lakes, ensuring content reflects a diverse audience and maintains high journalistic standards.
- Develop and implement innovative strategies to enhance audience reach and engagement on digital and social platforms.
- Use audience data and analytics to inform editorial decisions and content strategy.
- Oversee the entire editorial process, from story conception to final production, ensuring thorough research and fact-checking.
- Manage breaking news effectively with strong, timely responses.
- Foster a culture of creativity and professional growth by mentoring a diverse team of journalists.
- Encourage and pilot new formats and technologies, measuring their impact on the audience.
- Build and maintain strong internal and external partnerships, including contributors and experts.
- Manage the department budget responsibly and seek economies of scale.
- Represent BBC Great Lakes in external forums and champion workforce diversity.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- A degree-level qualification (BA/BSc/HND) in a relevant field.
- Strong editorial judgment with the ability to identify impactful stories reflecting complex regional issues.
- A recent track record of leading content production (radio and digital) at a senior level, specifically focused on the Great Lakes region.
- Experience in launching new digital products or programs that have grown audience reach and reputation.
- Substantial knowledge of data analytics tools for informed decision-making regarding content strategy.
- Proven experience in high-level stakeholder management.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills in Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, and English are all essential.
