Role Overview
The Manager, Asset and Liability Management (ALM) is responsible for overseeing Equity Bank Kenya's liquidity, interest rate risks, and balance sheet strategies. This role involves proactive risk management, policy development, and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements such as Basel III and AML policies. The successful candidate will work closely with the ALCO committee and other stakeholders to optimize funding profiles, manage financial modeling, and drive treasury performance across subsidiaries.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Treasury Strategy
- Liquidity Management: Oversee and enhance treasury liquidity processes, monitoring positions including Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR) and gap analysis to avoid regulatory breaches.
- Interest Rate Risk Management: Collaborate with the Country Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO) to mitigate impacts from interest rate and liquidity risks, focusing on IRRBB exposures.
- Proactive Risk Management: Anticipate market and regulatory challenges, implementing proactive strategies to manage and mitigate risks effectively.
- Policy Development: Partner with the CFO and Country Treasury to ensure effective execution of ALM policies, guidelines, and manuals.
- Balance Sheet Management: Conduct analytics, forecasting, and financial modeling for strategic decision-making.
- Funding Strategy: Formulate strategies to optimize liquidity and funding positions, ensuring diversification and lengthening of the funding profile.
Risk Management
- Limit Management: Monitor and escalate liquidity and IRRBB risks, ensuring adherence to limits and implementing remedial actions.
- Risk Appetite Evaluation: Evaluate risk appetite versus exposure to ensure alignment with organizational tolerance levels.
- ERMF Compliance: Maintain systems and processes to comply with bank and country treasury policies.
- AML Compliance: Report suspicious activities regarding money laundering and terrorist financing.
Processes & Governance
- Expert Guidance: Provide guidance to ALCO leveraging international ALM best practices.
- Return Optimization: Maximize return on excess liquidity and investment securities while minimizing costs and risk exposures.
- FTP Framework: Implement the Funds Transfer Pricing (FTP) framework to drive balance sheet behavior.
- Framework Collaboration: Work with Market Risk, Finance, and Credit on ICAAP and ILAAP frameworks.
- Performance Reporting: Deliver accurate reports on liquidity, funding, and treasury KPIs to senior management.
Talent Management
- Build a strong talent pipeline focused on diversity, inclusion, and bank values.
- Lead, mentor, and develop sales teams and treasury professionals across traditional and digital channels.
- Drive a high-performance culture and succession planning.
Qualifications and Experience
- 5+ years of experience in Treasury or Finance, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Deep expertise in liquidity management, funding, cash pooling, balance sheet optimization, funding structures, and hedging strategies.
- Must be experienced in Basel III regulatory requirements.
- Strong understanding of African financial markets, regulatory environments, and cross-border Treasury operations.
- Proven experience with Treasury Management Systems (TMS) and related technologies.
- Advanced analytical, financial modeling and presentation skills (Excel, PowerPoint).
- Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or a related field; a Master’s degree is beneficial.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management capability.
