We are seeking a Legal Manager to ensure that all legal and commercial activities align with company guidelines. This role involves handling complex contract reviews, leading negotiations, managing litigation, and providing strategic legal advice to project teams, particularly within the infrastructure and engineering consultancy sectors.
Key Responsibilities
Contract Management: Review terms and conditions for specific contracts, ensuring obligations for SJ group companies align with commercial and legal guidelines. Lead or assist in contract negotiations with clients, sub-consultants, contractors, and other third parties.
Litigation and Dispute Resolution: Manage litigation matters, including consultations with external legal counsel, involvement in tender appeal processes, and managing debt collection processes. Resolve contractual disputes effectively.
Tendering Support: Provide legal and commercial advice during business tendering activities, identifying and mitigating risks in proposals. Interface with bid managers and advisors regarding tax and insurance.
Project Advisory: Provide guidance to project managers on contractual obligations and general legal advice. Assist with ad hoc responsibilities such as drafting legal notices and letters aligned with SMEC standard practice.
Compliance and MIS: Ensure implementation and monitoring of company policies, procedures, and internal controls. Maintain MIS updates and ensure regulatory compliance.
Key Performance Indicators
Successful conclusion of contracts with favorable commercial and legal terms.
Effective resolution of litigation, arbitration, and other dispute matters.
Recovery of bad debts through appropriate legal mechanisms.
Adherence to legal and regulatory compliance measured through audits.
Strong attention to detail and ability to perform under pressure while meeting timelines.
Demonstration of independent judgment and proactive initiative.
Excellent communication skills in English for drafting and negotiations.
Flexibility to travel and work beyond official hours as required.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent better legal qualification.
Certification: Professional Attorney Certification.
Experience: Minimum of 7-9 years of post-qualification experience.
Specialized Expertise: Experience handling high-stake construction contracts based on FIDIC and IFI standards. Proven exposure in drafting and negotiating engineering design consultancy and construction contracts.
Litigation: Experience handling commercial litigations and arbitrations.
Licensing: A valid driver’s licence is required.
Tools: Proficiency in MS Excel and PowerPoint is an added advantage.
