The Lead Marine Painter / Paint Inspector provides oversight, instruction, and supervision to Painters and Painter Helpers. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality surface coating applications while maintaining a safe and efficient work environment within the marine and industrial sectors.
Principal Accountabilities
Team Leadership: Lead the paint shop team during all work performed and participate in on-the-job training of junior shop personnel.
Project Coordination: Oversee and coordinate schedules on service work orders and assist in determining parts, supplies, and material requirements for job accomplishment.
Technical Execution: Perform abrasive blasting, priming, and painting of surfaces. Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces for coating.
Resource Management: Inventory, control, and properly store all necessary paint, solvents, and abrasives. Maintain and inventory all painting equipment and tools.
Safety and Compliance: Ensure the team operates in compliance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) systems and hazardous material storage protocols. Assist in writing safety analyses for each job and ensure the team wears appropriate PPE at all times.
General Duties: Performs other duties as assigned to support project objectives.
Knowledge & Skills
Working knowledge of the application of paint and surface coatings.
Knowledge of measuring surface area to provide accurate estimates of products needed for each job.
Ability to follow all safety requirements, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Ability to lead a team and create a positive work environment.
Knowledge of and ability to perform proper surface preparation by abrasive blasting and mechanical means.
Familiarity working with Safety Data Sheet (SDS) systems.
Knowledgeable working with hazardous material and its proper storage.
Experience & Education
High school diploma or equivalent (KCSE).
Five (5) years’ experience in paint preparation, painting, sanding, and scuffing, or related field.
Two (2) years experience working in a supervisory role.
Possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Completion of an Industrial/Commercial painting training program preferred.
